Overview:
Flying Tigers is a web drama produced by the collaborative efforts of YOUKU and Shaw Brothers Pictures. This series belongs in the genre of crime, thriller and action. This modern criminal series has a boastful ensemble of cast consisting of Michael Miu, Bosco Wong, Ron Ng, Eddie Cheung, Hugo Wong and more. This series was produced by renowned Hong Kong producers Virginia Lok and Raymond Lee.
Even though this series’s name ‘飛虎之潛行極戰’ contains both the phrases ‘飛虎’ and ‘潛行’ as well as the fact that it surrounds the theme of the SDU (Special Duties Unit) and undercovers. The plot has no correlation with neither 《飛虎》(Tiger Cubs) or《潛行狙擊》(Life of Omission).

Song Thoughts:
Theme Song 主题曲 - 《Reunion》 Raymond Lam (林峰)/MC Jin
Interlude 插曲/片尾曲 - 《虽然这个世界》Bosco Wong (黄宗泽)/Ron Ng (吴卓羲)
Given that these 2 songs have been tailored for this drama, there’s no way where this can go wrong. These 2 songs are SOOO GOOD! I think that the name for this theme song is really fitting for this series because of the fact that this series really brought a lot of actors together who are in/used to be in TVB since this is a production by a third party hence the name《Reunion》. Raymond Lam singing this song just makes it THAT much better, his voice is really suited for this part and as for MC Jin… despite this song being great, he should just stick to rapping in English.😝 The interlude was brainwashing, no doubt that you would start humming this song after finishing this series. But I would gladly be brainwashed by this song because of how great this song IS.😂 The fact that this song has been sung by the 2 most significant actors/characters in this series is amazing! It’s been a while since either of them has sung and Bosco’s voice is 😍. Anyways, I found this interlude to be really suitable for the plot as well as this series in general.
Review:
Most probably the most anticipated series in a long time! This series was honestly AMAZING. It’s not perfect, but everyone has their flaws. Despite its imperfections, this series has officially become my favourite series! First of all, let’s talk about the cast. If you manage to get Michael Miu, Bosco Wong, Ron Ng and Eddie Cheung in one series, you’re doing something right. I mean honestly what can go wrong? I have to admit that the plot isn’t FLAWLESS and there was some questionable points here and there but generally the story was great and believable. This series excels in the aspect that there were a lot of large-scaled action and bomb scenes as well as the amazing cinematography that really makes this feels like the grand production which it is. I feel like one of the few characters that stood out to me in this series would be Lu Man Na. Poised, elegant and scheming. Christine Ng was PERFECT as this character, able to pull off the devious side of being a triad leader at the same time able to pull off the loving and caring character of Ko Ka Long’s mother.
Back to the plot, I think that the story flowed well and moved at a reasonable pace and strategically manipulates the pace of their story to get the audiences on the edge of their seats by the end of the series. The character developments of this series have generally been great, especially the build-up of the mastermind behind U384 – Red Wolf(红狼). I think that the time frame of this series can be improved on in the sense where the audiences have an idea of how long has past – especially during the period where Ko Ka Long was being an UC in U384, not necessarily the generic ‘两年后‘ but maybe try to get it across to the audience through another method. (This may be just be me being dumb but…) One other thing that I noticed upon watching the first episode again was the fact that the team doubted Ah Fei’s leadership skills and after their stimulation training, Ah Fei said something along the lines of ‘那个阿朗身手不错‘ as if it’s their first time training together, even though they later seemed to be in the same team for an extensive period of time (unless this was the lack of timeframe as mentioned earlier). 😝
*brace yourself for some childishness*
All in all, I feel like this series IS JUST GREAT OKAY DONT DOUBT ME
*childishness ends here, thanks for the toleration 🤗*
Michael Miu(苗侨伟) → Nip Yu Hong (聂宇航)
Michael Miu – most probably the coolest 60-year-old out there. He NEVER disappoints. Being a veteran, not only did he excel in his character, he also brings out the best in his other casts and enhances their performances. This isn’t really HIS problem, but I do think that characters that share extremely similar personalities as Nip Sir keeps reprising on screen such as Cheuk Sir from Line Walker 1 & 2. I’m not complaining about it, it’s just something that I’ve noticed. The intelligence of this character is through the roof and the way Michael Miu presents it is 👌. How cool and collected this character is makes the audiences feel reassured because of the large amount of irrational people in this series. 😂
Bosco Wong (黄宗泽) → Vincent Ko Ka Long (高家朗)
Ko Ka Long… an absolute heartthrob ! 😍 A perfect human being – Intelligent, Humorous and Devoted. What more can you ask for? This character was the most well-written character in this series as the audience has an in-depth understanding of him despite his character being a rather conservative person with his feelings. Bosco Wong completely NAILED this character! As an audience, you can really tell the dilemma that he has when he was given the mission to become a UC to, practically, arrest his biological mother after single-handedly arresting his father not long before. The way that he showed his inner conflict was AMAZING and the execution of his feeling of having to betray the woman whom he loved deeply and everyone around him was a really impactful scene. Bosco Wong can pull off both the ‘good-guy’ character AS WELL AS the ‘bad-guy’ role despite the questionable wardrobe of this character, but he can rock those outfits and pretty much salvage anything with his good looks. I mean, you would be lying if you say that you didn’t fall for this ever-so-charming actor/character. (especially in that SDU uniform/shirt) 😉.
Ron Ng (吴卓羲) → Marcus Ko Ka Jun(高家俊)
Well, this character was all over the place! Sometimes I wished that someone would slap some sense into him. That was kind of mean. But anyways, I think that as much as I hope to do that this character was well written in a sense that he has a goal and what he wants is really evident. Ron Ng played this well and Ron Ng is finally a 高级督察 (Senior Inspector) 😂. As I was saying, the personality of this character has been well thought out and the character development can REALLY be seen as the series goes on and it’s nice to see this character grow.
Eddie Cheung (张兆辉) → Lui Cheuk Fong (雷焯峰)
雷Sir ! An expert in dealing with bombs, guns and terrorists – the absolute opposite in a relationship. This character is unpredictable, a respectable authoritative figure in the Special Duties Unit but the fact that he doesn’t bother to find out more about something or show that he cares about someone is a characteristic of him that I sometimes find slightly frustrating. I mean if he cared more about the case of William, he might not have died, who knows (but he might have still died).. but that’s besides the point. And if he tried to understand Ah Long’s actions, then maybe things wouldn’t have turned out to be so bad during the early periods of him being a UC as well as the time where he helped Nip Sir.
Oscar Leung(梁烈唯) → Kenny (肯尼)
Kenny was an EXTREMELY well-written, this character is a great enough reason for someone to start watching this series. The way which Oscar Leung pulled off this character was absolutely phenomenal! All of his habits suited Kenny SO well, the way he walks and the way he moves in general is so on point. On top of this, the tone that which Kenny (Oscar Leung) talks in adds so much more to that character that it allowed the character to reach a new level of ‘psychotic’ which I have NEVER thought can be attained. I feel like the infamous way which Kenny points at something that reveals his tattoo is something that has become iconic 😂. Another charisma of Kenny as a character is the fact that he is a character that might not necessarily be better looking than the main characters but you somehow find yourself falling love with him.
Bosco Wong(黄宗泽) & Venus Wong(王敏奕) → Vincent Ko Ka Long(高家朗) & Vivian Dai Yi Fei (戴以菲)
This pairing of actor and actress was completely unexpected. BUT IT WORKED OUT SO WELL. I’ve never ever shipped 2 people more in real life. Anyways, I think that the chemistry that they had with each other was undeniable and they were really comfortable and natural around each other on screen which amplifies/enhances their performances. Venus Wong really pulled off the tough, charming and smart Dai Yi Fei and fully embraced her character in her. She is one tough cookie but you still has her feminine and gentle side which she only reveals when she’s around her father and the person she loves. Their love story was UNFORGETTABLE 😍. There isn't really a ‘love story’ going on per se, but the fact that they stuck with each other through everything was #goals. How both of them still remained devoted to each other even when Ko Ka Long became a UC was enough to show that they were meant for each other. On top of that, Ah Fei waited for him despite not knowing whether he was a UC or not could prove the same point. The scene where Ah Fei went to his house after he resign to be a UC was genuinely heartbreaking, it was such an impactful scene despite it being SOO simple. The way that he confesses to Ah Fei was honestly so flipping cute and the way that he proposed to her was TRULY unique, sincere and is definitely something that not everyone would be able to do. The infamous ‘bridge’ in this series where Ko Ka Long confessed to her as well as the place where they returned to ever so often is now so much more than a bridge as the bridge was where the majority of their love story took place.
they're so cutee. |
The ongoing promise between them that she would be by his side no matter what happens and that Ah Long promised his grandma to only love one woman in his life was 😩😍. A few of the most memorable scenes of them would be the smirk that Ah Fei had on her face where Ah Long recovered his position of an SDU member and told her that he wouldn’t give up and would court her again. Another one would be the scene at the bridge where Ko Ka Long told her that he promised his grandma to only love one woman in his life which she replied with, ‘Then I’ll stay with you forever.’ The dates that they go on are soo cute, they’re relationship is so unique as they treat each other as their best friends more so their boyfriend/girlfriends. Their happy ending was slightly predictable, but at the same time it wouldn’t satisfy the audiences if they left the series where they didn’t end up together. At least I know that I wouldn’t be very happy if they didn’t eventually end up together.. after all, I’m a sucker for happy endings 🤗 (especially for these two)
totally NOT being biased at all. 😝 |
Ron Ng(吴卓羲) & Grace Chan(陈凯琳) → Marcus Ko Ka Jun(高家俊) & Zhong Nga Xuen (庄雅璇)
To be COMPLETELY honest, I think that Ko Ka Jun should’ve ended up with Ling Man Lok (played by Jeana Ho). The scenes between Ah Jun and Nga Xuen can be rather awkward at times. I mean, they don’t look bad together, but I think that the pairing of these characters could be done better. One of the main questions that I still have after watching this series twice was the fact that Ko Ka Jun and Zhong Nga Xuen literally went to from being friends to being engaged in less than an hour of the ACTUAL time in the series. I mean they never had anything between them other than an extremely questionable one night stand that started from ‘relaxing by the pier’.
Facts:
1) This is the first time after 15 years that Bosco Wong and Ron Ng have collaborated in a production after ‘Triumph In The Skies’ in 2003.
2) After it’s double-episode premiere in China (YOUKU) and Hong Kong (myTV Super), it surpassed 100 million views within 1 hour of release.
3) Raymond Lam was originally part of the cast for this series however due to reasons, was unable to make it.
4) Joe Ma was originally casted as Lui Cheuk Fong but was unable to make it into the production due to a clash of schedule.
5) Despite being an older brother to Ron Ng in this series, Bosco Wong is actually more than a year younger than Ron Ng.
6) Being an uncle-nephew duo, Bosco Wong and Hugo Wong actually have a 1.5 years age difference with Bosco Wong being older than his ‘uncle’
7) This series broke the record of Line Walker for being the most viewed Hong Kong drama in China – currently at 4.18 billion views (as of 2/7/18).
P.S It’s the SUMMER HOLIDAYS!! I’ll try to get more reviews out over the next few weeks.
